Ft. Howes endurance ride

Jan and Bill Stevens did a tremendous job hosting
the Fort Howes ride -  located in southeast Montana,
on Bill's family ranch (4th generation, orginial
homesteaders)on the edge of Custer National Forest.
This was without a doubt the most beautiful trail
I've ever ridden. Mostly open grassland meadows,
some wooded trails, a few canyons and some very
cool sandstone rock formations. The footing was
perfect, the trail was well marked. This is real
ranch country so there were gates everywhere, but
all of the neighbors and locals helped with the
ride, and every gate had somebody there to keep
it open. There was water every 3 or 4 miles, and
tall luscious grass for the horses at all times
on the trail and at camp. The Stevens even went
so far as to mow a mile long 15 foot swath in the hay
meadows for the final run to the finish.
This really is a special ride - Jan and
Bill went all out - steak dinner, great awards,
well organized camp and vet check area, everything
was first class. The 25, 50 and 100 mile courses
had no repeats, just loop after loop of beautiful
trail. I wouldn't be surprised to see this become
a world class event some day.

I had the perfect ride on Khruschev - one of those
days to remember forever. Rode with Steve and
Dinah Rojek and Sue Greenall (from Vermont)and
Suzie Hayes on the Almarah stallion she's campaigning
and Harriet Aikens. Great folks, good company,
and we all agreed this was the nicest ride we'd
ever done.
