HACKAMORE

Yesterday we rode the GMHA 25-mile CTR using a
Hackamore for the first time, and got a 3rd place
ribbon (about 50 competitors).

The device is called "English" or "Jumper" and we
used pony size because of the Arab's narrow nose.
The nosepiece is leather with fleece padding and
we wrapped the curb chain with vet wrap for padding.

I felt that I had more control than with the full cheek
snaffle and did not lose points for "sore mouth". It
caused him to tuck his chin under rather than throw
his head up.

Another factor IMHO was the fact that we started
cross training. The driving strengthened and taught
him to use his rear more. The driving instructor found
that he liked a solid bit instead of a full cheek snaffle,
so we are driving with an eggbutt mullen mouth. A
change in shoeing also helped.

Thanks for your suggestions and explanations.

John and Meshack (Sure nice to get rid of that BIT!)
