RE: Some symptoms of hypothyroidism

Sharon:

I had a Saddlebred once that was hypothyroid.

Weight gain is one symptom. Sometimes they get "cresty"
and the crest will feel hard to the touch.
Some horses get hives easily or allergic reactions to bugs
more easily.
Contrary to what most people think, lethargy is not always
present when the horse is low thyroid.
Sometimes, horses with low thyroid, can founder on spring grass
so it can be more serious than the horse being just "fat".

There is also controversey amongst the veterinary practioners
as to whether the test (T4) is accurate and at what time
of day the blood should be drawn (thyroid levels flucuate
during a 24 hr. period). So be sure to discuss this
with your vet.

If you suspect hypothyroidism, then you're doing the right
thing keeping her in a dry lot & very little grain until
you know for sure.
