Re: Managing Pastured Horses

Speaking from the view of a mare/stallion owner and breeder, I HATE when
mares are kept with stallions! Many geldings will mount and even penetrate a
mare. This can be at the least annoying, and at the worst, quite
devastating. The mares can pick up infections that lead to major problems
whether they are being bred or not. If they are going to be bred, this ads
both time and a lot of expense to get the mare clean. If the mare is
pregnant, she could lose the foal. Again, this involves a lot of time,
money, and heartache. All in all, I feel that it is best to keep the
geldings and the mares separated.
