I have a friend with a Morgan mare, that if ridden in any
bit with a shank, could use her lips to bring one shank into her mouth.. then she'd hold it there.
Of course, then the rier has no control... and she knew it, and off
you'd go to wherever she wanted- most of the time faster than you wanted.

We tried alot of bits on her and settled with a egg butt (broken
mouthed) snaffle.  She goes great in it.
She does NOT like anything (bit or bit-less) with a shank, but
 we think it's really the jaw pressure frm the curb strap she
 protested to so strongly.
