I try not to expose my horses to the "adrenalin rush" in competition until
they have completed several rides. The green horse has no business running
up front anyway, so I like to mount up well before the start, before things
get hectic, and ride calmly off in the OTHER direction until the rush has
gone. This way the horse is well warmed up (both physically and mentally)
before going out on the trail, and generally as I filter back through camp to
start, I encounter other folks going something near the speed I'd like to go,
and we can be supportive of each other.

Sue Brown makes an excellent point about WHOSE adrenalin rush--if YOU are up
tight and jittery, likely he will be, too!
