Bloodmeal for horses

I put boodmeal on some plants in my Orange County garden and the horses started to eat/lick the treated ground.  Why do they want /need it?  What if anything does it show about a nuritional need.?   Is it O.K for them to lick it up?  Any ideas?  Thanks.
