I would be cautious about this (being prone myself to taking a tumble now & 
then!).  Since I ride a stallion, I always bring a crop (again the 
psychological factor of the horse knowing it's there stops a lot of problems 
before they start!).  Personally, I prefer to carry it in my hand so I can 
drop it if it gets snagged on a tree or brush, or if I should fall.
