John,
I never feed grain the morning of the ride.  I  was told that a later
night feeding was best, and that it takes about 8 hours for the grain to
convert to energy anyway.  I think there's less chance of colic or tying
up if they have lots of hay right up to ride time, but no grain  I also
rode a very excitable Arabian mare and felt she didn't need a heavy feed
before we took off!(literally sometimes!)
I did feed a little(a handful for flavor) in her bran mash at the
nonstop, and  most of my friends do this also.  I know others DO feed
grain the morning of the ride though.  Maureen
