Hi Heidi - 

I take my dogs along as long as I am going slow & there are lots of stock 
tanks or water sources that they can jump in & cool off.

I find that if they can keep up by just trotting along, they will be fine.  
If they have to run hard to keep up, then you risk injury as they have such 
will to please they can run themselve right into the ground.
