Tevis Cup Survival and Endurance Riding Clinic

AUBURN, California -- An all day endurance riding clinic with tips on 
surviving and succeeding at the Tevis Cup 100 Mile One Day Ride is 
scheduled for Wednesday, July 21, 1999, in Auburn, California, at the 
Gold Country Fairgrounds.  The clinic is planned three-days prior to 
the Tevis Cup Ride where some 250 riders plan to compete.  The clinic 
begins at 9:30 AM with registration at 8:30 AM and includes the 
following speakers and topics:
  

Stephen Duren, Ph.D. and Kathleen Crandell Ph.D. will discuss their 
knowledge of and experiences with equine nutrition and exercise 
physiology particularly how its affect's endurance athletes.  Both 
doctors Duren and Crandell specialize in performance horse nutrition 
for Kentucky Equine Research, Inc. and are responsible for technical 
support and consultation.  Dr. Duren provided nutritional consultation 
for the 1998 Kentucky Derby winner Real Quiet. 

Donna Synder-Smith, author and nationally recognized riding 
consultant, will present  the advantages of using centered riding 
techniques to benefit both horse and rider during endurance riding 
competition.  Donna will offer methods to increase riding awareness 
through audience participation in fun, easy to learn exercises.  Donna 
is a Director-at-Large of the American Endurance Ride Conference.  She 
holds clinics throughout the United States and is currently a 
contributor of informative articles in the AERC Endurance News.

Mo Livermore, a Board of Governor of the Western States Trail 
Foundation, will discuss the importance of rider care and 
preparations.  Mo is a multi-talented horsewoman and ultra-marathon 
runner.  She has completed both the Tevis Cup 100 Mile Ride and the 
Western States 100 Mile Endurance Run.  She has also competed in 
numerous Ride & Tie Races and has ridden horseback 1,960 miles over 
the Pony Express Overland Trail from St. Joseph, Missouri to 
Sacramento, California.

Kate Riordan, a Board of Governor of the Western States Trail 
Foundation, will provide a demonstration of Tellington Touch Equine 
Aware Method (TTEAM) for use and benefit during the Tevis.  Kate is 
editor of the Sierra Heritage Magazine in Auburn, California, and is 
well-known for her knowledge and practice of message therapy and 
holistic treatment in athletic equines.   

Other clinic topics include:  Updates regarding the Western States 
Trail  and the 1999 Tevis Cup Ride, and The State of Endurance Riding 
in American and abroad by Doyle Patrick, Executive Director of the 
American Endurance Ride Conference.

All clinic participants are treated to a continental breakfast, 
luncheon, mid-morning and afternoon coffee breaks, and sponsored prize 
drawings and giveaways.  Sponsors of the clinic will provide 
participants with a trade show of endurance related products and 
services.  There will be an evening reception and outdoor barbecue 
hosted and sponsored by the Western States Trail Foundation.

The Tevis Cup 100 Mile One Day Ride scheduled for July 24, 1999, and 
is the first and foremost equestrian endurance event of its kind in 
the World.  The historic Western States Trail used by the event 
crosses the rugged Sierra Nevada Mountains between Squaw Valley and 
Auburn, California.  Competitors are from all over the World as well 
as throughout the United States and Canada.  The Tevis Cup Ride is 
celebrating its 45th Anniversary.

Reservations are being accepted for the clinic and space is limited.  
The cost to attend the clinic is $40 and there are discounts for Tevis 
Cup riders or crew members. Trade show exhibitor and sponsorship
