National Dress in the UAE

Sandra McCartie sandmc@home.com
National dress for women is the abba, also call shaila or abaya, a black full length covering. Under the abba women wear loose sirwal, or trousers, and a kandura, a dress often embroidered in gold or silver and the thaub. The burqa is the black mask covering the nose and mouth.

For men, the white full-length shirt is called the dishdash. The headcloth, usually red-chequered or plain white, is the gutra. The black rope wrapped around the head to keep the gutra in place is called the agal, and under this headdress, men wear a small skull cap or taqia. A cloak may be worn outside the dishdash. It is called an abba or bisht, usually colored black.
