Re: RC: Weighty Issue- XHW Division

Oh no, not weight again!

OK, if you set up a XHW division to satisfy the 240# riders, then what
about the 280# riders? Are we going to set up an XXHW division for
them? What about the 300# riders?

IMO we have too many weight divisions already, and at too many rides
you have only one or two HW riders competing. Sure, we can set up
enough divisions so that everybody gets First Place -- but what
meaning will it have?

I'd like to see the AERC go back to three weight divisions, with the
boundaries set to have about equal numbers of competitors in each.
Hell, I'd like to see us eliminate weight divisions altogether. Of
course weight matters, just as it matters in football (where the light
folks are disadvantaged) and height matters in basketball. It doesn't
matter nearly as much in endurance riding as some HW riders claim,
though. And making riders carry dead weight as a handicap was folly,
I'm glad that has pretty much gone by the wayside.

The bottom line is, can you ride the miles and finish with a sound
horse?  That's "To Finish Is To Win" and weight is not a factor here;
athleticism, horsemanship, and conditioning is. For the race for
first place, the top athletes (equine/human) will prevail, and if
you're a heavier ride you have to compensate just as the shorter
basketball player must do. I don't see the NBA having height
divisions.
