Lameness Question

Nik owldark@iname.com
Perhaps I've always been lucky and never had to deal with a serious lameness issue before...but now I've got one...last winter I had a mare do something silly on ice and hurt herself - no swelling, no heat, so signs of ANYTHING other than the fact that she was clearly off at the trot. With a two month lay-up she was fine, we did miles of slow conditioning afterwards, no problem, did a easy 50 miler two weeks ago without incident and with all A's...I let her {and me} rest and today when we saddled up she was rarin' to go - but lame at the trot. She wanted to GO but was so off I couldn't allow it....I longed her just a bit to get a view of the problem....no sign of a gimp unless at a slow trot, and then it's only minor {under saddle it's very clear}. After careful examination of her legs, hooves, and shoulders there is absolutely no heat, swelling, or oddities - EXCEPT as you run your fingers down either side of the cannon bone, facing the horse head on, just below the knee on the left fore there is a bump on each side of the cannon that is NOT there on the other leg. It is so small you cannot see it and barely feel it on close, careful examination. I cannot tell if it is painful - it doesn't appear so but she's a tough cookie. It IS on the cannon - not the tendon. It is hard, like bone or cartilage, and not moveable or mushy in any way. Is this indicative of any injury that anyone is aware of? The mare is in a huge pasture alone but with another horse corralled right beside her - she does barrel around like a bat out of hell from time to time but weaves incessently if stalled ...I'm inclined to just let her be in the pasture given those choices...but barring x-rays {which we'll get if the situation persists for another week or two} does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks!
