Many stallions simply don't have the opportunity to race.  I still would far 
rather breed to one who is very closely related to successful endurance 
horses and is unraced himself than to one who is a success but whose 
relatives I have seen to fail.  There is a LOT more to endurance than 
conformation (not that one can ignore that)--cardiovascular capability, 
enzymatic function of liver and muscle, digestive capability, competitive 
desire, etc.  Every one of those things is just as heritable as the 
straightness of the legs, the quality of the bone, the length of the hip, the 
angle of the shoulder, and the shape of the nose.  The pedigree is the only 
indicator one has as to whether those not-so-visible traits run in the family 
or not.
