Gaits to use going up steep hills

I was always told to walk or trot up steep hills, depending on the horse's
level of conditioning. But recently I read somewhere that troting up steep
hills is very hard on the horse and that one should either walk or canter
(canter is always Jack's choice <g>).

Responses?
