RE: Trailer Loading
An important point of John Lyons method of loading is the teaching of a cue
to move forward that works every time etc.  While learning the follies of
the old methods of loading with ropes tied to everything is sight, I
stumbled on the use of a cotton rope in a loop around the butt.  If applied
with moderate pressure and allowing them to look things over when deciding
to get in it is a fine way of loading.  On new horses I will most likely
teach the whip/tap method starting in the pen, but my old ones will still
experience a butt rope when they decide not to load the first time on a
given day.  Since it is a well established cue, they walk right in as soon
as they feel it on their rumps.  I have a one inch cotton rope that I "eye"
spliced into the proper sized loop.  It resides in my trailer even though it
is rarely used.
Using food as a bribe is a bad way to go.  My first horse, Savage, taught
that to me.
