RE: Soles. packing, etc.

I've been reading this particular thread with interest. Years ago at the
track I was taught by an old groom to NOT pick the horses feet out before he
went to the track. See, everyday we packed clay or "mud" into their feet,
covered with a circle of paper torn from an old feed bag. Did this everyday
after they had been galloped. The next morning "O'darkthirty" we just pulled
dirty straw/manure off the bottom and sent them out with the remaining clay
left in place. those sand tracks were very abrasive to the bottom of a
horses foot.

Just a couple of weeks ago my farrier was out. I'd had the shoes off my mare
for a bit but needed to get them put back on. Would have liked to leave them
off longer because it was doing her heels good. When I got her last year she
had contracted and unlevel heels. His shoeing has helped but theres nothing
like going barefoot to spread those heels out. Anyway, he suggested that I
pack the grooves to either side of her frogs with this stuff that he uses
under pads. It's a two part compound that when mixed becomes a rubbery, firm
material, more stable than silicon. He said that packed into the grooves it
would put some pressure outward on the heels and help them spread out. It
would have to be replaced regularly but what the hay. Hmmmmmmmm. More food
for thought.
