Re: RC: preparing for 100s

Stephanie, If we're doing 50's at consistant intervals (at least once a
month, often twice) We only do light conditioning to prepare for 100's.
Actually, we don't even do as much conditioning for 50's as I think we
"should" (not enough time)so we ride conservatively. In my IMO a lot of
people ride their horses legs off in training. A lot has to do with how
competitive you plan to be. Running up front in tough competition
requires more training, but except for a dozen or so horses,
historically the horses don't last. Let your goals be your guide.
As for shoeing, it will depend on how fast the shoes wear out. In some
places shoes wear out faster than the hoof grows. This can be dealt with
by hard surfacing the shoes (not borium) or using easy boots.
Any increase in energy output usually requires an increase in energy
input. Don't let your horse lose weight before you increase! Increase
the feed as you increase exercise.
Try to think of your first 100 as an experiment. Don't do anything too
drastic. You'll know what particular things your horse needs to prepare
for the next one.
Good Luck.
