Re: Tying

"Try re-training her by tying her to a stout post or tree with a regular
halter and large, soft cotton rope run through a slip knot loop around
her girth behind the front legs, and then bring it up between her front
legs and tie it to the tree with a quick release knot"

One year at the Big Horn ride in Wyo. head vet Ray Randall had brought a
bunch of pictures of horses that he had worked on in the past . One of
these pictures was of a 3 year old filly that had been tied exactly as you
described , soft rope and done correctly .When this filly pulled back it
took all the hide (and I mean all the hide ) from about 6 to 8 inches
behind the elbow to the elbow . It looked as though someone had taken a
scalpel and just cut all around that filly and then pulled the hide towards
the front .The filly would never be ridden again and was scarred for life
.Here on the ranch we use Heidi's method , a good solid post with a heavy
truck innertube around it and an unbreakable halter and quick release lead
rope . This has even worked with 5,6 year old mustangs right off the range
