not a hoax

This message was sent to my government agency from the head of our
communications unit:

Over the weekend there have been widespread reports of an virus, named
"Melissa", which has infected commercial, government and military e-mail
systems. The FBI and the National Infrastructure Protection Center on
Sunday have issued a warning regarding this virus. This virus does not
appear to be a hoax.

The virus is contained in a Word document which is attached to an e-mail
message. The e-mail message begins with the words:

Important Message from <the name of an infected colleague>

The body of the message contains the accompanying text:

Here is the document that you asked for...don't show anyone else;-)

If you receive such a message PLEASE DELETE IT IMMEDIATELY!!!! We would
also like to immediately contact the ITS Help Desk if you have received such
an e-mail message!

The infected file contains a simple Word Macro. According to news reports,
it will not work in Office 95, but will work in Office 97 and Office 2000.
The macro prompts Microsoft Outlook to send an e-mail message to the first
50 addresses in your Outlook address book under the heading Important
Message from. The infected file will infect the default Word template,
Normal.dot, and thus subsequent Word documents created will also contain the
virus.
