Ride Story

Hi all - 

Boy I just read the great stories about the Renegade ride - I understand about
talking to rocks & having them talk back - I live in AZ & have named a rock or
two myself.  Would love to someday do that ride.

Anyway, just completed the Land of the Sun 25 miler on my 17 yr old gelding
Packy.  The last attempt I made with him was last fall at the Man Against
Horse ride where we pulled at 5 miles due to poor rider judgement at the start
& inability of horse to come back to this planet.

My goals were met & are as follows:  1.  Horse camped MUCH better - not
fretting at the trailer, ate a little better did not drink as much as I would
like, but better than our last attempt.  Also remained mannerly riding around
Fri. evening.
2.  Calmed down faster when riders blew by us - maybe it was more accepted
being left faster - he got frazzled JUST before our vet check as some riders
trotted by.  But all worked out - we have entered the "now you have to get
over it & move on" portion of our training.  Loosely translated - we get upset
forward rather than sideways.
3.  Finished ride in 5 hrs looking fresh - vetted out with slight dehydration.

This is a really beautiful ride & management does a super job keeping track of
everyone - I missed a turn & in less than 30 mins. someone was backtracking
looking for me from their checkpoint.  If you ever get a chance to try this
ride I can highly recommend it.

Had to leave early (husband was battling a cold & had suffered long enough) so
cannot verify results.

Next stop - Cobre Ridge ride 25, then if all goes well, our first 50 at Cinder
Lakes.
