Trouble is, though, Tom, that those of us out observing in the field for the
last quarter of a century or so have come to the same conclusions that Susan
and Sarah have--which is that these guys need every bit of hay you can get
into them.  But you didn't like the observations from the "sandy loam" either,
last time we got into this debate.  Sorry, it's mare season now so I don't
really have time to join in a brouhaha, but I've spent most of my life in the
field instead of in the lab, and I find it interesting how the lab folks are
beginning to come up with the whys and wherefors of what we have been noticing
in the field for a long time.  

BTW--have you read any of Dr. Valentine's stuff on fat?  Her work is showing
that even (shudder--dare I say it?) RACEHORSES benefit from increasing the fat
in their diets...  She's at Oregon State, if you want to talk to her about
it--better to get it straight from the horse's mouth than to get it second-
hand from an old hack who stays out in the sandy loam...
