sugar and iodine
Sugar does have some natural bacteria-fighting properties. I learned
this in a dietetics class dealing with critical control points (temps
and such; I'm a prep cook and use that a lot). That's why often you can
leave foods out like cakes that have been frosted with icing made with
milk, even though milk will normally spoil, because the sugar acts like
a preservative and inhibits bacteria growth. I'd forgotten about using
it on wounds, though. I think I read that in "Equus" or somewhere but
my brain is too cluttered to remember many details.
