My vet injects them in the back of the rear 
leg.  The rationale is that if they get sore, at least they can eat and 
drink normally.  I guess some horses get so sore, they can't even put their 
head down.   If you  shoot them up high on top of the hip, and an 
abcess forms, it can't drain and there can be very serious, even fatal 
consequences.  This happened to a horse at the high-powered show-Arab ranch 
down the road.  One of those ten jillion dollar horses...  dead from 
an abcessed injection site.  Too sad.
