In hot weather, I usually let it soak for about a half hour and take away
leftovers (if there are any) within a few hours.  You'll have to play around
with your own situation to see what works.  When it starts to sour, you'll
catch a whiff of alcohol.  It's not a vitally critical matter, like it would
be if it started to mold (which it wouldn't, not for days).

The other alternative is to feed it wet until the horses are used to it,
then feed it dry so no spoilage problems.
