The Pioneer award is an annual award given to the rider with the most points
earned in multi-day rides (4 or more consecutive days). They are called
pioneer rides because they originally (and in some cases still do) took place
on historic trails, such as the Pony Express Trail, the Capitol to Capitol
Trail, the Applegate-Lassen Trail, etc.
