To the best of my abiliity to remember, I believe that LD rides (previously
called mini-rides) were not in place until some time after AERC was officially
formed in 1972. The first
endurance ride was the Tevis at 100 miles, followed by some long disbanded 50
mile rides like Blue Mt. and Diamondfield Jack. Castle Rock was among the
earliest rides, starting in 1967 (but did not become a full 50 miles until
1969). I can't remember exactly when LD rides began, but I'll bet Courtney
Hart knows, as it seems to me he was one of the early promoters of the
concept.
