And that's what's so refreshing about distance riding (CTR/endurance, 15 miles
to 100 to multi-days, whatever your definition), you are absolutely free to
figure out for youself how to get you & your horse thru those miles within the
parameters of humane tack (nothing about humane clothing --- so bareback is
probably ok for the very brave!), and fit to continue at the end.  
We are not caught in the stuffy rules of the past, but are free to use the
best of the old and new.
