Alfalfa hay and gastric ulscers

I am one of the infamous lurkers and have enjoyed the many discussions on ride
camp. Went to a lecture on gastric ulcer syndrome last week. It was given by
Dr. Charles MacAllister of Oklahoma State. He said 80 to 90% of performance
horses have gastric ulcers. Also said horses turned out on pasture 24hrs. had
very low incidence. But the main thing I found that some might disagree with
was that he quoted a study that seemed to indicate that horses fed alfalfa hay
had less incidence? He did say that this was a small study, however he felt
that alfalfa might lower the ph of the stomach? Any comments? Shirley, R.V.T.
