Dry Hoof Walls

After going through the usual springtime wet-dry-wet-dry cycle here in
central Maryland, my gelding's hoof walls are full of tiny cracks, though
his soles look fine.  Any really effective way to moisturize his hooves?
Any way to prevent it from happening again next year?
