I'm not sure how you define "regular household iodine."  Tamed iodine is
likely what you would get from a human medical supply, though.  It is also
known as "gentle" iodine, and is marketed under brand names such as Betadine,
etc.  It is iodine bonded to a protein base, and does not burn the way
tincture of iodine does.  Tincture of iodine is iodine in an alcohol base, and
is very "strong".  It is what one should use on navels, and to toughen soles
of feet, etc.  It discolors skin and can actually burn.  When I was a kid,
this was about the only sort of iodine available, so we would have called it
"regular household iodine" back then.  But not likely now.
