Capillary refill is VERY closely related to hydration, but stress can cause
fluids to no longer be where they should be in the cardiovascular system, even
if the horse has been taking on adequate fluids. Although Wendy's suggestions
for relaxation at vet checks were excellent, they will not do a lot to improve
capillary refill time in most cases. I would be very concerned about a 4
second capillary refill time, and would caution a rider about it, even if all
other parameters look good. If other parameters are good, it most likely
would not warrant a pull, but definitely a slowing-down and observation time.
