Ann, I would tend to agree with you about all but one thing...I always
travel with  my CCW permit and weapon.  I never really felt it was necessary
until one night, coming home, and someone passed us (luckily, my husband was
with me) and pointed back at the trailer.  Well, I was out the truck door
and back to check on Elly before he'd even come to a complete stop.
Fortunately, there was nothing wrong with her, but it made me think.  I
usually travel alone over long distances and that's all it would take to get
me to stop--so now I take them.  I've never had a need for it, but its nice
knowing its there.
