help! feeding toothless old horse

NOT enduro-related, but I need reliable help fast and my browser ain't
browsing...reply privately if possible to avoid Ridecamp clutter:

I just acquired a 24 yo gelding to be Misty's pasture pal. He's in fairly
good flesh from his turnout on tender covercrop rye at his previous
residence. I've got nothing that tender--just fescue and orchard grass. He
can't chew it well enough to swallow it, nor the hay from the same
pasture--so I'm finding little wads of damp grass everywhere. Meanwhile,
his scattering of teeth have been tuned by the equine dentist, who said put
him on Equine Senior if he still can't manage the grass after his dental
work. (The veterinarian who did his initial exam and inoculations just told
me he needed his teeth floated--she didn't say he was missing half of them
and might need to be on the equivalent of equine Ensure forever!)

Is there anything similar that's considerably cheaper than $15/50# bag?
That works out to be at least $100/month in feed alone, which is a lot for
the maintenance of a non-ridable beastie. Yep, price is an object for some
of us. Anyone have alternatives, like a large blender I could put hay or
grass into? (Eventually I could turn some meadows into a rye field, but
that will take some doing.)

Thanks,

Sally and Misty in Floyd, VA
