Re:Paint and pinto coloring

Here is an excerpt from a web site put out by the University of
California where Ann Bowling works.

It is part of a report done by Laurie Fio, The Horse Report Vol. 12, No.
2. October, 1994. The Horse Report is a publication of the Equine
Research Laboratory, School of Veterinary Medicine, University of
California,
Davis, CA 95616-8744.

And Laurie states, "In the past, it was always assumed that the overo
pattern was due to a recessive gene because of the unexpected and
unpredictable occurrence of overo foals from two horses of solid color
(cropouts). According to Dr. Ann Bowling, of the University of
California at Davis Veterinary Genetics Laboratory, who reviewed
studbook records and photographic archives from the American Paint Horse
Association, it appears that the overo pattern is transmitted as a
dominant gene."

AND, The article goes on to state, "By following the model of overo
being transmitted as a dominant trait, breeders can cross an overo to a
solid and expect a 50% chance of getting another overo instead of the
previously thought chance occurrence. The studbook records of various
cropout Paint stallions (product of two solid parents) revealed that
when bred to solid mares, approximately 50% turned out overo and 50%
turned out solid."

AND, "Furthermore, with overo being dominant, the solid colored foal
from a solid to overo cross probably would not carry an overo gene to be
passed on."

So without the dominant color gene, no matter whether it is sabino,
splash white, tobiano, overo, tovero, or what ever else color gene is
present a QH is just a QH and a Paint is a Paint because of the color
gene that it carries. So where does that leave breeding stock paints?
QH's/TB's that the paint registry is making money off of and QH's/TB's
that will probably never throw color.

Just my two cents worth.
In ND inflation has not hit yet and an opinion is still worth two
cents.:-)
