Whiskeytown 30/50/100 Ride Results

We had a great time, and from the feedback of the riders, they did too. For
our first endurance ride at Whiskeytown Lake National Recreation Area, west
of Redding California, we had a good number of riders that made it easy to
manage. The weather was a cool 50-55 in the morning and warmed up to mid
70's by mid-day. Base Camp was at Horse Camp below the Whiskeytown Damn in
the southern part of the park.

The first loop was a 30 miler that went up to 2800' over Monarch Ridge and
back down to Whiskeytown Lake at 1000' for the 1st Vet Check at 20 miles.
All 4 100's were in the Vet Check together and looked great. Craig Brown,
DVM, from Chico/Oroville area, did a P&R and sent them on their way. Most
of them stayed an extra 5 minutes. The 50's were more spread out and stayed
for 30 minutes at Vet Check 1. One 50 miler self pulled her horse. This
ended up being the only pull of the day for the 50's. The 30 milers, which
started 2.5 hours later, also had a 30 minute hold and looked good. Three
of the 30 milers did not make it to Vet Check 1 because of self pulls within
the first 5 miles. These were the only 30 mile pulls of the day.

The completion of the first loop was 10 miles back to base camp for Vet
Check 2. Here Mark Winning, DVM, from Corning area, did a great job getting
the horses through. Again all 100's were together and had a 15 minute hold
with the horses looking good. The 50's came in for an hour lunch stop with
1st Karen Fredrickson on KB Sabra , 2nd Judy Ethriidge on JT Orion , 3rd
Richard Smith on Wifon and 4th Jazon Wonders on Shamas Tabriz and looking
strong and confident. The day was over for the 30's with all having a great
day and a good ride.

The second loop was a 20 miler rising to 2616' and back down to 1000' to
base camp for Vet Check 3. The riders and the horses felt this climb and
the steep descent on the way down. It was tough, but most agreed they felt
closer to God and enjoyed the view from Kanaka Peak. The 100's, Ed Meyrs on
Boney, Jane Cloud on Ezer's Cloud, Sharon Schmidt on Staszek and Jack
Enderle on Fad were still together only separated by a few minutes and ready
for a hour hold. All horses looked great and left the Vet Check together.
Now it was time for the 50's to finish. And coming down the road was the
man who paced a good race, 1st Jazon Wonders, 2nd Karen Fredrickson and 3rd
Judy Smith.

The third loop repeated the 30 mile, loop 1. At Vet Check 4 Jane Cloud came
in ahead of the pack took advantage of the 30 minute hold. She left 15
minutes before the other 3 got to the Vet Check 4. Jane said she had not
seen them after she fell behind them going up Monarch Ridge. We got
concerned as the were-a-bouts of the other 3 riders. Finally the pack came
in. We figured they went 2-3 miles back down Monarch Ridge before they had
to climb back up and connect to the trail were they made the wrong turn. We
thought the ribbons had been pulled, however, the riders admitted to
overlooking them. Even though they got lost, they were not giving in yet.

At Vet Check 5, Jane was still out in front by 45 minutes. The hour hold did
the horses and riders well. The 4th loop was a 10 mile single track trial
of rolling hills that returned them to base camp. With night setting in
they took off after Jane, who had a 45 minute lead. The advantage, 3 travel
better than 1. And with Jane having only 3 100's under her belt, the
question was how well would she travel in the dark, alone and on a trail
that was well lit with glow bars (125 to be exact).

At Vet Check 6 the 5th and final loop was a repeat of the 10 mile loop.
Jane arrived first. She went through the P&R and was off. She said she was
walking and using her flashlight. The pack came in 15 minutes back and made
up 30 minutes on Jane and Ezer's. Sharon said they were trotting and
walking. They also did a quick P&R, tied glow bars to the breast collars,
ditched the flashlights and set out to catch Jane. At 1230am all 4 riders
came across the finish line together holding hands. What a demonstration of
team work and determination.

30 Mile BC went to Daniel Wells and Theddel.
50 mile BC competition was within a few hours after the finish. Jazon
Wonders and Shamas Tabriz looked fit, smooth and ready to do another 50.
100 Mile BC was the next morning. It was close, and Jane Cloud and Ezer's
had a bit more than the others.

Saturday night most of the competitors stayed for BBQ
Tri-Tip/Chicken/Sausage dinner with all the "fixins". The camp fire kept us
warm as we waited for the 100 milers, shared stories and vino and met new
friends. Gayle and I want to congratulate all the finishers. Thank you to
the great Vets Mark Winning and Craig Brown. If you want the highest
quality vets at your ride, these two do a fantastic job. We would
especially like to thank the volunteers, Our parents, family and friends.
We could not have pulled it off without your help.

If you did not come, you missed a good one. Do not fret. Gayle and I are
adding a 25 and 50 miler to the Mountainside Ride and Tie we put on in
April. The course will be different, but with all the excitement of this
one. And if you can not make to the Mountainside Endurance Ride and Ride
and Tie we will do the Whiskeytown Lake 30/50/100 next October.

Happy Trials
