Hi Dan,

3 acres of pasture isn't much if several horses are going to share it. In
Kansas we figure 3 acres per horse if you've got good pasture!

I would be hesitant about the alfalfa only because I've had two horses
founder on it. Other people have had good luck with it, maybe I've just had
sensistive horses, but I believe alfalfa was meant for milk cows not for
horses.
