quality of gut sounds

I'm hoping some of the vets on this list will jump on this one. I
would like to know about the quality of gut sounds and the significance
of the different sounds heard. Sometimes I hear a short high pitch
ping, and other times a long low grumble. What is the meaning of the
different sounds and which indicates gas? Is duration of sounds of
importance?
How long does a vet listen for gut sounds? Is constant sounds, hper
gut something to worry about in the absence of distress? Linda
