Wendy and Linda,

Good points. Times my horses needed treatment there was not a special
treatment vet - the ride vets did the treatment and it did not take too
much of their time. (even the IV case - the vet set it up and I sat
with the horse and changed the bags while the vet did her normal job of
monitoring the ride) and thankfully my mare perked up before the end of
the ride and did not require additional treatment. Nancy may also have
felt sorry for me and given me a break not charging for her time since
I was a student at that time. In either case I would have been willing to
pay a treatment charge if they had included it in the bill. The following
quote from the AERC rules says it pretty well.

"The AERC services the requirements of the competitor by promulgating
and establishing rules and regulations, recording and publicizing results
of events, and providing awards; but the competitor is totally responsible
for self and mount before, during and after an endurance ride."

P.S. This can also apply to Dave's post. Ride management and vets can
not force you to get on-site veterinary care. (You can't refuse needed
treatment and still get a completion award after the ride, but I'm not
going to find that section of the rules right now)
