I wonder if a lot of us aren't underestimating the amount of grain we
offer our horses. I've tended to think of a "3 lb" coffee can as 3 lbs
of grain, but I think grain is actually heavier than coffee, so this is
probably more like 4 lbs. I always offer at least half a can of grain
at vet checks; like the horses Karen commented on, Grey wont eat that much
but a few bites is probably close to a pound. Has anyone actually weighed
a coffee can of grain? I'm curious, but not enough to run out and buy
a kitchen scale right now. Also is there any research yet on the glucose
response from beet pulp? Has any research been done showing the glucose
response to grain on horses that were given free choice hay, or hay and
beet pulp rather than fasted beforehand? I'm going to continue to offer
Grey free choice between grass (his favorite), hay, and grain + beet
pulp mix at vet checks and cut down on the amount of grain I offer in
the morning (plus give it at least 4 hours before the start) before the
ride based on my experiences this summer plus what I've read in this
thread and the literature.

Thanks everybody for really getting me thinking about this,

Teresa
