Ideally, it would not be the pace. Their intermediate gait should be some
variation of a four beat gait. All gaited horses have the same footfall. The
actual timing will depend on the gait (breed). Some, but not all gaited
horses will trot and/or pace, but I don't know of any gaited breeds in which
a 2 beat pace is acceptable (The Icelandic flying pace is actually a 4 beat
stepping pace), although there are all too many that in actuallity do pace.
