Good reply on the "gut function during exercise" questions. I just wanted
to add one tiny word to your recommendations.

get some "WET" hay into your horse. A horse that has been pushed to the
point where the gut sounds are going quiet during an endurance ride will
very likely be dehydrated to various degrees. Wet hay (wet feed of any
kind) is preferred to
reduce the fluid shifts into the gut, away from the blood and tissues.
