>From personal experience I find that I like mares better than Geldings.
Once a mare is experienced they have a much better sense of self
preservation and will listen a whole lot better and are calmer. My mare
has NEVER gotten attached at a ride even when she is in season...in fact
when she is just coming in is the best time to compete with her because she
has a lot more go. She absolutely WILL NOT let me hurt her on a ride and
is much more careful than my geldings. I could never run her to death even
if I tried(not that I ever would mind you 'cause I love her too much!).
The geldings that I have ridden seem to rely on me more and always get herd
bound to some horse and then don't listen. My mare and I seem to have more
of a mutual understanding and trust. She is extremely sensible on the
trail and has kept me from getting lost more than once!!!!! She is a great
leader but also competative -- my geldings get more nervous by themselves.
Anyway -- I have always been able to bond stronger to the mares that I
have ridden than the geldings. I think that they are better especially for
a beginner.
