longeing

I am not sure what type of work my horse was used for before I
purchased him (well, his last owner had him in a field for about a
year and a half because he didn't really ride and just got the horse
to say he had a horse, but before that I don't know), but I do know
that he must have been taught to some degree what a longe line is all
about because he knew what to do when he found himself at the end of
one the first time I tried to longe him (he walked and trotted
without a problem and when I told him to stop, he
quietly stopped and turned in towards me and stood there waiting-it
was so cute, especially since I had no idea that he knew what to do).
He goes fine on a small circle at the walk and trot (approx. 6-7 feet), but I can't
seem to get him to move out to a larger circle (at least 12 ft.) and stay there.
He will suddenly appear clueless when he is that much further away from me
and will try to come in closer or will not listen to my cues. Help!
Lysane and Buck (dazed and confused at either end of a longe line)
P.S. Are my dimensions right for a larger circle or should it be even
larger (if I can get him to stay out there!!)
