I have been trying to get a saddle to fit my young horse for the almost three years I have owned him. His body has changed so much since I brought him home it seems like finding as saddle that will work is impossible. I started with english saddles with no luck, then used a Zes saddle for almost 18 months with good results, but much to my depression found some more of those darn white hairs! They were faint, and I have done over 700 miles on him with this saddle with no sore back at all, but none the less, the white hairs came up. Enough!! I called Steve at SR saddlery in Bend Oregon and ordered up a custom made SR Enduro saddle. I figured I'm not going to experiment any more, and even though I can still use the Zes (which I really like riding in) I want to end the problems once and for all. It takes Steve 3 to 4 months to build a saddle, but I waited as patiently as I could. The big day came a couple of weeks ago with the delivery of a very large box. Janene at SporTack set m
e up with a nice pad designed for the SR, and also got me a biothane girth I'm trying out as well. The sadle itself is really a work of art in terms of construction. I was able to see a cutaway version of how Steve makes the thing while up in Oregon at the Pan American Championship. He has a very innovative way to match the tree to the custom cast I had to create of my horse's back. I used my Cloud stirrups (which I wouldn't give up for all the steel irons in England) on the SR, and I also fabricated my wool saddle cover to fit as well. I have ridden a few hours in it now and like it a lot. The sweat contact marks on the horses back look like, well, they look like a saddle which was custom made for my horse. I'm very satisified with the saddle so far, and I'll be sure to report on how it works on my horse after a few months. Here's hoping I'm done with saddle fit problems.
