Linda,
Here in NH I riding weekends all year round. For winter footware we use a
product call Hoof Grips. ( rest of the year we use ShockTamers)

These are a round rubber tube type of rim pad. They leave the center of
the foot exposed but as the horse walks the rubber tube flexes and pushes
the snow out. This is with borium caulks for the ice as well (4 "dots" per
foot).

They provide better traction then the old anti-snowballing pads did too!
