Riding in SNOW

We have moved this summer to a more northern climate and anticipate
heavy snows here at home on the mountain top. We plan to ride some
throughout the winter so that we have a chance at fitting in some spring
rides. Our one horse has a slightly contracted foot from an old
injury. This foot balls up snow more than any other horse I've ever
had. He's practically wlaking on one stilt after a few steps!

In the past when we rode in the little snow that we had, I tried
greasing his foot, sprayed with Pam, etc. It didn't seem to work very
well. What does the rest of you winter riders do? Are there spcial
snow pads that you recommend? Rim pads? Just use an easy boot?
(Afraid that the easy boot might be too slippery.)

Appreciate any feed back as our farrier is open to any ideas we bring to
him. He says most people around here put the horses away for the winter
& go skiing!
