Rabies

I'd rather give a rabies vaccine then worry. My new horse will put her nose
anywhere, not a problem I'm used to, and eventually a coyote, skunk, possum,
raccoon, or bat will wander up from the river into the pasture (bats are in
the barn). As these are all carriers in California I just know Dakota will
run right over and sniff. Unfortunatly, rabies cases are on the rise all
over the U.S. A few years back on the East Coast (don't remember when or
where as I am going on info from a vet class 2 falls ago) a hunting club
brought in a load of raccoons for hunting purposes. They were not
scrupulous on where they got them from or if they were sick and just
released them. Several were rabid. This has led to a rise in rabies as the
raccoons moved out and infected other animals. The rise in rabies is moving
both west, north, and south from where the raccoons released. I enjoy my
horses to much to worry if they get bit so I vaccinate for everything in my
area.
