Dear Friends at Ridecamp:

Have any of you had success in returning at horse to endurance after a
severe case of toxic laminitis??

Brief history:

Condition was discovered early on and treated with vigor by equine vet
with consultation from UC Davis school of vet med. Twenty liters of
fluid promptly via stomach tube and IV. Xrays of feet to use as a
baseline for future reference. Bute., Ace/Pro, and Bant on 4 hour
rotations. DMSO via stomach tube for 3 days. Fluids via IV for 3 days at
the rate of 2 liters ever 4 hours. Lilly pads put on front
feet with shoes left on. Bedded with 8 inches shavings in stall and 6
inches in paddock. Ice....Oh God I don't know how much I iced but it was
for 20 minutes several times a day.

Shoes removed on day 3 and lilly pads putback on front feet.
Ace/Pro discontinued on day 4.

At one week still on Bute and Bant with 6 hour rotations. X.Rays show one
millimeter of rotation of the bone on both feet. Left front went from 19
to 20 and right from 20 to 21. Vets seems very pleased.

Vet and Farrier are discussing Hart Bar shoes in a few more days.

Here is where I need your help! Has anyone had sucess with returning a
horse like the above to endurance riding???? Or shall I just lease him
for one dollar a year to one of the local 4-H youngsters?? Please be
frank!

Thank you kindly,
